Eczematolepis was named by Miller (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 521; nomen novum for Acantholepis Newberry 1875]. It is not extant. Its type is Eczematolepis fragilis.

It was assigned to Ichthyodorulites by Hay (1902); to Ptyctodontidae by Denison (1978); and to Ptyctodontida by Sepkoski (2002).
