Cypraea punctata was named by Linneaus (1771). It is extant.

It was recombined as Palmadusta (Palmadusta) punctata by Schilder (1941); it was recombined as Ransonia punctata by Dolin and Lozouet (2004); it was recombined as Notadusta punctata by Cate (1979), Soriano (2006) and Moretzsohn and Rosenberg (2015).
