Heterosteus was named by Asmuss (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant. Its type is Heterosteus asmussi.

It was assigned to Chelonichthyidae by Jordan (1963); to Heterosteidae by Denison (1978); and to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891) and Sepkoski (2002).
