Selenosteus was named by Dean (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Arthrodira by Sepkoski (2002); and to Selenosteidae by Jordan (1963), Denison (1978) and Rücklin (2011).
