Cypraea avellana was named by Sowerby (1823). It is extant.

It was recombined as Trivia avellana by Wood (1842) and Harmer et al. (1925); it was recombined as Trivia (Sulcotrivia) avellana by Schilder (1941); it was recombined as Niveria avellana by Bouchet and Gofas (2010).
