Oestophorus was named by Miller (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Oestophorus lilleyi.

It was assigned to Ichthyodorulites by Hay (1902); to Edestidae by Jordan (1963); and to Placodermi by Denison (1978) and Sepkoski (2002).
