Desmiodus was named by St. John and Worthen (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. It is not extant. Its type is Desmiodus tumidus.
It was assigned to Orodontidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); to Desmiodontida by Zangerl (1981) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Euchondrocephali by Ginter et al. (2010).
