Falcatus was named by Lund (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Physonemus falcatus.

It was assigned to Stethacanthidae by Lund (1985); to Symmoriida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Falcatidae by Ginter et al. (2010).
