Taxonomy
Tamiobatis was named by Eastman (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. It is not extant. Its type is Tamiobatis vetustus. It is the type genus of Tamiobatidae.

It was assigned to Tamiobatidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963) and Williams (1998); to Symmoriida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ctenacanthidae by Duffin and Ginter (2006) and Ginter et al. (2010).
