Taxonomy
Helicoprion was named by Karpinsky (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: P l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 718]. It is the type genus of Helicoprionidae.
It was assigned to Edestidae by Larson and Scott (1955), Jordan (1963) and Kelly and Zangerl (1976); to Eugeneodontida by Sepkoski (2002); to Agassizodontidae by Zangerl (1981) and Ginter et al. (2010); and to Helicoprionidae by Hanger and Strong (1998) and Itano and Lucas (2018).
