Sarcoprion was named by Nielsen (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Edestidae by Nielsen (1952); to Eugeneodontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Agassizodontidae by Zangerl (1981) and Ginter et al. (2010).
