Taxonomy
Leiodus was named by Saint John and Worthen (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. Its type is Leiodus calcaratus.

It was assigned to Orodontidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963) and Zangerl (1981); to Orodontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Leiodontidae by Ginter et al. (2010).
