Arctacanthus was named by Nielsen (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Arctacanthus uncinatus.

It was assigned to Ctenacanthoidea by Zangerl (1981); to Ctenacanthida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hybodontoidea by Yamagishi (2004); and to Chimaeriformes by Li et al. (2022).
