Prioniodina excavata was named by Ziegler (1960). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Trichognathus excavata by Branson and Mehl (1933); it was recombined as Lonchodina walliseri by Ziegler (1960); it was recombined as Trichonodella excavata by Ethington and Furnish (1962); it was recombined as Ligonodina excavata by Jeppsson (1972); it was recombined as Oulodus walliseri by Viira (1983); it was recombined as Oulodus excavatus by Sweet and Schönlaub (1975) and Jeppsson and Aldridge (2000).
