Sphenacanthus was named by Agassiz (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: C Ms P]. It is the type genus of Sphenacanthidae.
It was assigned to Cestraciontidae by Woodward (1889); to Heterodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Ctenacanthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sphenacanthidae by Ivanov (1999), Pauliv et al. (2012), Ivanov et al. (2013) and Ivanov (2017).
