Centrophorus was named by Müller and Henle (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is extant. Its type is Squalus granulosus.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Jordan (1963), Keyes (1984) and Long (1992); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Centrophoridae by Kocsis (2007), Adnet et al. (2008), Carillo-Briceño et al. (2014), Carrillo-Briceño et al. (2016) and Villafaña et al. (2020).
