Deania was named by Jordan and Snyder (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Squalidae by Jordan (1963) and Long (1992); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Centrophoridae by Cahuzac et al. (2007), Adnet et al. (2008) and VillafaƱa et al. (2020).
