Megasqualus was named by Herman (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-u T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Cvancara and Hoganson (1993) and Nel et al. (1999); and to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002).
