Protoxynotus was named by Herman (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is not extant. Its type is Protoxynotus misburgensis.
It was assigned to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Somniosidae by Feichtinger et al. (2022), Feichtinger et al. (2022) and Feichtinger et al. (2024).
