Taxonomy
Squaliolus was named by Smith and Radcliffe (1912) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant. Its type is Squaliolus laticaudus.

It was assigned to Scymnorhinidae by Jordan (1963); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dalatiidae by Cahuzac et al. (2007) and Underwood and Schlogl (2013).
