Heminautilus japonicus was named by Baudouin et al. (2016). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sa 203, Sanchu area, upper Ishido Formation, Gunma, which is in a Barremian coastal sandstone in the Ishido Formation of Japan.
