Brachaelurus was named by Ogilby (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 525,884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Orectolobidae by Jordan (1963) and Bryant (1989); and to Orectolobiformes by Sepkoski (2002) and Underwood (2006).
