Palaeoscyllium was named by Wagner (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Scyllidae by Woodward (1889); to Scylliorhinidae by Jordan (1963); to Orectolobiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scyliorhinidae by Underwood (2002), Underwood and Ward (2004), Rees (2005) and Underwood and Ward (2008).
