Microcorax was named by Cappetta and Case (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. Its type is Microcorax crassus.

It was assigned to Lamniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anacoracidae by Cappetta and Case (1975), Cappetta and Case (1999) and Shimada et al. (2006).
