Mitsukurina was named by Jordan (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Lamniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mitsukurinidae by Jordan (1963), Herman (1977), Compagno (2005), Kocsis (2007) and VillafaƱa et al. (2020).
