Taxonomy
Phytobiidae was named by Gistel (1848). It is extant. Its type is Phytobius.

It was reranked as the tribe Phytobiini by Cong et al. (1996), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Legalov (2015).

It was assigned to Ceutorhynchinae by Cong et al. (1996) and Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Ceutorhynchitae by Legalov (2015).

Synonyms
  • Ceutorhynchus miegi was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Bale Museum R 243, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Kleinkembs, which is in a Rupelian lacustrine - large marl/limestone in the Salt Formation of Germany.

    It was considered a nomen dubium by Legalov (2015).
