Chaenogaleus was named by Gill (1861) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Galeidae by Jordan (1963); to Carcharhiniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemigaleidae by Compagno (2005), Reinecke and Radwanski (2015) and VillafaƱa et al. (2020).
