Paragaleus was named by Budker (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Carcharhinidae by Kumar and Loyal (1987); to Carcharhiniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemigaleidae by Purdy et al. (2001), Compagno (2005), Kocsis (2007), Carillo-Briceño et al. (2014), Reinecke and Radwanski (2015) and Villafaña et al. (2020).
