Nemacanthus was named by Agassiz (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr l Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 884].

It was assigned to Heterodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeospinacidae by Koot et al. (2013).
