Proetus cuvieri was named by Steininger (1831).
It was recombined as Proetus (Gerastos) cuvieri by Goldfuss (1843) and Owens (1973); it was recombined as Gerastos cuvieri by Lieberman (1994), Basse (1996), Magrean (2007) and van Viersen (2021).
