Platyrhina was named by Müller and Henle (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Rajidae by Jaekel (1894) and Eastman (1904); to Rhinobatidae by Casier (1946); to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002); to Plathyrhinidae by Carnevale et al. (2014); and to Platyrhinidae by Jordan (1963), Cappetta (1987) and Marramà et al. (2018).
