Stylochlamydium was named by Haeckel (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spongodiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001) and Sharma and Takahashi (2007).
