Spathobatis was named by Thiollière (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: J Aale J Kimm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Batoidea by Underwood et al. (1999); to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhinobatoidei by Underwood and Rees (2002); and to Rhinobatidae by Jordan (1963), Thies (1983), Cappetta (1987), Biddle (1993), Underwood (2002), Underwood and Ward (2004) and Kriwet et al. (2009).
