Aetomylaeus was named by Garman (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myliobatidae by Jordan (1963), Cappetta (1987) and Szabo et al. (2017).
