Apocopodon was named by Cope (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 2,884]. Its type is Apocopodon sericeus.

It was assigned to Myliobatidae by Cope (1885), Cope (1886), Woodward (1889) and Cappetta (1987); and to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
