Brachyrhizodus was named by Romer (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 884].

It was assigned to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myliobatidae by Cappetta (1987), Case and Schwimmer (1988) and Claeson et al. (2010).
