Eomobula was named by Herman et al. (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l]. Its type is Eomobula stehmanni.

It was assigned to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mobulidae by Herman et al. (1988) and Tabuce et al. (2005).
