Heterotorpedo was named by Ward (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is not extant. Its type is Heterotorpedo fowleri.

It was assigned to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dasyatoidea by Cappetta (1987), Noubhani and Cappetta (1997) and Rana et al. (2006).
