Solenodus was named by Trautschold (1874) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Solenodus crenulatus.

It was assigned to Psammodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Chondrenchelyiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cochliodontiformes by Koot et al. (2013).
