Sandalodus was named by Newberry and Worthen (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: teeth]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cochliodontidae by Woodward (1889), Hay (1902), Eastman (1903), Jordan (1963) and Nelson (2006).
