Venustodus was named by St. John and Worthen (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: teeth]. It is not extant. Its type is Chomatodus venustus.
It was assigned to Cochliodontidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); and to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002).
