Chimaera was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: K u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Chimaeridae, Chimaeroidea.
It was assigned to Chimaeriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chimaeridae by Woodward (1891), Hay (1902), Jordan (1963), Cassier (1966), Nelson (2006) and Kent (2018).
