Taxonomy
Deltoptychius was named by Morris and Roberts (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise C Serp Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. It is not extant. Its type is Cochliodus acutus.

It was assigned to Cochliodontidae by Woodward (1889), Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); to Chimaeriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Deltoptychiidae by Zangerl (1981) and Nelson (2006).
