Taxonomy
Edaphodon was named by Buckland (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u T Plio]. It is the type genus of Edaphodontinae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Edaphodus by Owen (1859).
It was assigned to Chimaeridae by Woodward (1891), Hay (1902), Chapman and Cudmore (1924), Leriche (1926), Leriche (1942), Rapp (1946), Cassier (1966) and Cappetta (1975); to Chimaeriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Edaphodontinae by Parmley and Cicimurri (2005), Nelson (2006) and Shin (2010); to Edaphodontidae by Leidy (1873), Applegate (1970), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Underwood and Cumbaa (2010) and Gouiric-Cavalli et al. (2015); and to Callorhynchidae by Kent (2018).
