Macrochilus ponderosum was named by Swallow (1858).

It was recombined as Soleniscus ponderosus by White (1884); it was recombined as Sphaerodoma ponderosa by Keyes (1894); it was recombined as Soleniscus (Macrochilina) ponderosa by Knight (1931); it was recombined as Soleniscus ponderosa by Yochelson and Saunders (1967).

C. R. Keyes 1894Shell large, heavy, subglobose, spire depressed ; volutions six in number, rapidly increasing in size from the apex, last one very large and ventricose. Aperture ovate; outer lip abruptly becoming sharp. Columella smooth. Surface glabrate, with faint lines of growth.
