Pristodus was named by Davis (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Peripristidae by Jordan (1963); to Petalodontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pristodontidae by Woodward (1889), Zangerl (1981), Lund (1989) and Ginter et al. (2010).
