Nostolepis was named by Pander (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 455,645]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Thelodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Climatiidae by Denison (1979); and to Climatiiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
