Taxonomy
Ischnacanthus was named by Powrie (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid D Sieg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 455]. It is not extant. Its type is Ischnacanthus gracilis. It was considered monophyletic by Voichyshyn and Szaniawski (2012).
It was assigned to Ischnacanthidae by Jordan (1963) and Denison (1979); to Ischnacanthida by Woodward (1891) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Ischnacanthiformes by Voichyshyn and Szaniawski (2012).
