Diplobelida was named by Jeletzky (1965).

It was reranked as the suborder Diplobelina by Jeletzky (1966).

It was assigned to Belemnitida by Jeletzky (1966); to Belemnoidea by Doyle et al. (1994); to Belemnoidea by Boyle and Rodhouse (2005); and to Coleoidea by Fuchs et al. (2013), Lehmann et al. (2016) and Fuchs (2019).
