Stenogale gaillardi was named by Viret (1929). Its type specimen is FSL 97707, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coderet (MP 30), which is in a MP 30 terrestrial horizon in France.
It was recombined as Viretictis gaillardi by de Bonis et al. (1999).
